These ground rules were adopted at May 2011 trainings led by our dear friend Holly O'Neill. These are for us to keep in mind and guide our behavior in our meetings together. Their purpose is to keep us on task, productive and working together as we manage Bellingham Cohousing.

Overarching Practices

1. Begin meetings with a review of these Ground Rules
2. Respect our consensus process
3. Support the facilitator and self-facilitate
4. Seek a balance of voices
5. End meetings with an evaluation of our use of these Ground Rules

Listening Guidelines

1. Listen with respectful body language
2. Allow space for quieter people to speak
3. Work to understand viewpoints expressed
4. Stay engaged - don’t mentally wander off
5. Seek a balance of voices

Speaking Guidelines

1. Raise your hand to speak
2. Moderate the volume of your voice: speak up or tone it down
3. Don't interrupt or engage in side or cross talk
4. Speak respectfully
5. Speak for yourself, from your own experience, not for others
6. Speak succinctly
7. Stay on topic
8. Be honest

Come to the Meeting Prepared

1. Read the agenda and any proposals ahead of time
2. Think about your questions, comments and concerns
3. This will help you be clear and concise at the meeting
